Exploring CBG and CBD for Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Related Neurodegenerative Conditions: Current Research Insights

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other forms of dementia involve progressive cognitive decline, memory loss, and behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) such as agitation, anxiety, and aggression. Underlying processes include amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque accumulation, tau hyperphosphorylation, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Limited disease-modifying treatments have increased interest in non-intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). These compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system and other pathways, offering potential neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and symptom-relieving effects. https://www.mdpi.com

This post reviews some of the scientific evidence on CBD and CBG for Alzheimer’s and dementia-related conditions, and discusses formulation differences (particularly nano-emulsified versus regular hemp extracts held under the tongue).Evidence remains preliminary; these are not FDA-approved treatments for dementia or Alzheimer’s. Always consult a healthcare provider before use, especially in older adults.

Mechanisms: How CBD and CBG May Support Brain Health

CBD and CBG target multiple pathways relevant to neurodegenerative diseases:

– Neuroprotection and Anti-Inflammatory Action: A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical AD models showed that CBD significantly reduced neuroinflammation markers, including glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) (p < 0.0001), IL-6, and iNOS, with variable effects on TNF-α and IL-1β. These changes could help reduce reactive gliosis and neuronal damage. https://www.mdpi.com

– Amyloid and Tau Pathology: Preclinical studies suggest CBD may reduce Aβ-induced toxicity, modulate plaque formation or clearance, and influence tau phosphorylation. In cell and animal models, CBD has counteracted Aβ cytotoxicity and supported cognitive function.

– Antioxidant Effects: Both CBD and CBG exhibit antioxidant properties that may protect against oxidative stress, a key contributor to neurodegeneration.

CBG has shown neuroprotective potential in models of cerebral ischemia and inflammation, which can contribute to vascular dementia.

Evidence for Symptom Management: Agitation, Anxiety, and Behavioral Symptoms

BPSD significantly affects quality of life for patients and caregivers. Clinical studies have explored cannabinoids primarily for these symptoms:

– A 2022 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that a broad-spectrum cannabis oil rich in CBD (30% CBD, 1% THC; administered sublingually) significantly reduced agitation compared to placebo in patients with dementia-related behavioral disturbances over 16 weeks.https://www.frontiersin.org

– The phase 2a CANBiS-AD trial (2024), a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, evaluated oral CBD (up to 600 mg/day) in Alzheimer’s patients with BPSD. It showed numerical improvements in Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) scores for agitation, anxiety, apathy, and caregiver distress, though larger trials are needed for confirmation.https://www.cambridge.org/

– An open-label trial of a high-CBD/low-THC sublingual solution over 8 weeks reported reductions in anxiety and agitation in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s or MCI patients, with some cognitive improvements noted.https://www.ajgponline.org.

– Ongoing trials include NCT05822362 (effects of CBD on AD biomarkers in at-risk individuals) and NCT04436081 (THC-free CBD oil for agitation in Alzheimer’s).

– A 2025 randomized trial of low-dose balanced THC-CBD extract also suggested potential benefits for symptoms in AD-related dementia. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

A 2025 meta-analysis indicated borderline significant benefits for behavioral symptoms and agitation with CBD (p=0.05), with generally mild adverse events. Preclinical data further support CBD improving age-related cognitive decline via reduced brain inflammation. https://doi.org/

Clinical evidence focuses more on symptom relief than disease modification and is limited by small samples and short durations.

CBG Research: Studies on Neurodegenerative Models

Research on CBG for dementia and Alzheimer’s is at an earlier stage than for CBD, with most data from preclinical models. Direct studies include:

– In a 2025 mouse study of transient global cerebral ischemia (a model relevant to vascular contributions to dementia), CBG (1–10 mg/kg) attenuated memory impairments, reduced hippocampal neuronal loss and neuroinflammation, and supported markers of neuroplasticity. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

– In a rat model of Alzheimer’s disease induced by intracerebroventricular administration of amyloid-beta 42, both CBD and CBG were investigated for effects on cognitive deficits. CBG treatment improved learning and memory performance in behavioral tests, reduced neuroinflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-1β), and decreased Aβ plaque expression in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. https://www.researchgate.net/

Additional cell-based studies suggest minor cannabinoids including CBG can block Aβ accumulation, promote its degradation, and prevent oxidative cell death (oxytosis). Human data specific to dementia remain limited, though acute CBG (20 mg) has shown reductions in anxiety and improvements in verbal memory recall in healthy adults.https://doi.org/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

Combinations of CBD, CBG, and other minor cannabinoids may offer synergistic (“entourage”) effects by addressing multiple AD hallmarks, such as inflammation and protein aggregation.

Nano-Emulsified vs. Regular Hemp Extract (Sublingual/Oil Under the Tongue)

Most hemp extracts for cannabinoids are lipid-based oils intended for sublingual use—held under the tongue for 30–60 seconds to promote mucosal absorption, which partially bypasses first-pass liver metabolism. Standard sublingual oils typically achieve moderate bioavailability, with effects onset in 15–45 minutes and duration of several hours. Absorption depends on holding time, individual factors, and the oil base.Nano-emulsified formulations reduce cannabinoid particles to nanoscale (<100–200 nm) using emulsifiers, creating micelles or liposomes that enhance water dispersibility and mucosal penetration. When compared for sublingual or oral-mucosal delivery:

– Bioavailability and Absorption: Nano versions often demonstrate significantly higher and faster absorption. Pharmacokinetic studies show nano-emulsions or self-nanoemulsifying systems can increase peak concentration (Cmax) and overall exposure (AUC) by 2–3 times or more compared to standard oil drops, with shorter time to peak (Tmax). This leads to more efficient delivery even via the sublingual route.
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

– Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) Penetration: Both regular and nanoemulsified CBD and CBG are highly lipophilic and cross the BBB primarily through passive diffusion. However, nanoemulsified formulations typically result in greater brain delivery because higher systemic blood levels mean more molecules are available to reach and cross the BBB. Preclinical studies have shown that CBD nanoemulsions can achieve substantially higher brain exposure; for example, one study reported a 3.7-fold increase in brain AUC (area under the curve) with a nanoemulsion compared to another nanoparticle formulation, with rapid brain uptake observed within minutes.
Similar principles apply to CBG, though direct nano-CBG brain delivery data are more limited.

https://www.sciencedirect.com

– Onset and Predictability: Nano formulations may provide quicker onset and more consistent effects, which could be particularly beneficial for managing acute symptoms such as agitation or anxiety in dementia patients.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

– Dosing Efficiency: Higher absorption could allow lower nominal doses to achieve similar effects, which may be advantageous for elderly users to minimize load or side effects.

Standard sublingual oils retain the full plant matrix (terpenes, minor cannabinoids) that may support the entourage effect observed in preclinical neuroprotection studies. Nano products can be formulated from isolates or full/broad-spectrum extracts, but processing may slightly alter some minor compounds. Long-term safety data for nano versions in dementia populations are still limited.

For sublingual use in neurodegenerative conditions, nano-emulsified CBD and CBG could offer improved reliability, faster onset, and potentially greater brain exposure compared to regular hemp oils. At the same time, traditional oils emphasize natural synergy. Clinical trials rarely detail exact formulation pharmacokinetics, so individual response, product quality (third-party tested for potency and purity), and medical guidance matter most.

Safety, Considerations, and Limitations

Reviewed trials generally report good tolerability with mild side effects (e.g., dizziness, sedation). Potential drug interactions exist via liver enzymes (CYP450), relevant for polypharmacy in older adults. THC-containing products may introduce additional psychoactivity risks.

Limitations include small sample sizes, variable dosing/formulations, short study durations, and a stronger focus on symptoms than on core pathology or biomarkers. Larger, longer-term randomized controlled trials with standardized preparations are needed.

Future Directions and Conclusion

Ongoing research, including biomarker-driven trials (e.g., NCT05822362) and studies on agitation, will help clarify optimal dosing, formulations, and potential disease-modifying roles. CBD and CBG combinations or multi-cannabinoid extracts may provide broader benefits. Advances in delivery systems, such as nano-emulsification for sublingual use, could enhance therapeutic consistency.

While preclinical and early clinical data are encouraging—particularly for managing agitation, anxiety, and neuroinflammation—CBD and CBG should be considered investigational supportive options alongside standard care, not replacements or cures. Prioritize high-quality, tested products and medical supervision.

Short Answer:
Sunmed’s GLP-1 Supplement supports your body’s natural production of the GLP-1 hormone for better satiety, blood sugar balance, and metabolic health using plant extracts. Sunmed’s Trim Collection uses full-spectrum hemp cannabinoids (especially THCV) to target the endocannabinoid system for appetite control and stress-related craving reduction. They work through different pathways, so many people use both together for comprehensive results. Neither is a synthetic drug like Ozempic®.

How Does Sunmed’s GLP-1 Supplement Work?

Sunmed’s GLP-1 Supplement helps your gut naturally produce more GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone that signals fullness after eating and supports steady blood sugar and energy levels. It does not contain synthetic GLP-1 or act as a medication. Instead, it uses three clinically studied plant-based ingredients:

Eriomin® (lemon bioflavonoids): Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials have shown that 200 mg/day of Eriomin increases GLP-1 levels (average 17–22%), while supporting reductions in blood glucose, insulin resistance markers, and systemic inflammation. These studies were conducted in prediabetic and diabetic individuals over 12 weeks.
PubMed study on Eriomin and GLP-1 | PMC full text | Another key trial.

Supresa® saffron extract: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in mildly overweight women found that Supresa significantly reduced snacking frequency and increased feelings of satiety within 8 weeks, with notable decreases in hunger compared to baseline and greater body weight reduction than placebo.
PubMed study on saffron extract and satiety/snacking.

Morosil™ red orange extract: Clinical trials, including a 12-week double-blind study and a 6-month randomized placebo-controlled trial, have demonstrated that Morosil supports reductions in body weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, and visceral/subcutaneous fat when used alongside diet and exercise. One 6-month study showed meaningful body weight and fat loss differences versus placebo.
PubMed 12-week Morosil study | 6-month Nutrients study (full text available).

Sunmed’s Trim products support weight management by working with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which helps regulate appetite, mood, stress, and metabolism. The star ingredient is NITRO-V™, a clinically tested full-spectrum hemp extract rich in:

THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) — which interacts with receptors involved in appetite regulation.

CBDV and CBD — which promote ECS balance and may help reduce stress-related eating.

In a 90-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study involving 125 participants, the NITRO-V™ hemp extract was associated with weight loss in subjects using the active ingredient (average reductions observed, with some participants losing up to 18 lbs), alongside improvements in waistline measurements and BMI, as well as reported decreases in hunger and food cravings. No changes to diet or exercise were required in the study protocol.
PubMed on THCV metabolic effects | Recent THCV weight loss study.

Trim is available in gummies, soft gels, and tinctures with no sugar or stimulants.

Sunmed GLP-1 vs Trim: What’s the Main Difference?

GLP-1 Supplement focuses on the gut hormone pathway (natural satiety and metabolic signals).
Trim Collection focuses on the endocannabinoid pathway (craving control and stress support via hemp compounds). Here’s a clear side-by-side comparison:

Aspect

Sunmed GLP-1 Supplement

Sunmed Trim Collection

Primary Pathway

Supports natural GLP-1 hormone production in the gut

Targets the endocannabinoid system (ECS) with hemp cannabinoids

Key Ingredients

Eriomin® lemon bioflavonoids, Supresa® saffron, Morosil™ red orange

NITRO-V™ hemp extract (THCV + CBDV + CBD)

Contains Hemp/CBD?

No — 100% plant-based, non-hemp

Yes — full-spectrum hemp (THCV-rich)

Best For

Steady fullness, blood sugar balance, metabolic support

Appetite suppression, stress-related cravings, calm energy

Clinical Highlights

Eriomin: ↑ GLP-1 (17–22%), ↓ blood glucose & inflammation; Supresa: reduced snacking/hunger in 8 weeks; Morosil: support for weight, BMI & fat reduction

NITRO-V™ 90-day study: weight loss (up to 18 lbs), waist reduction, BMI improvement; reduced hunger & cravings

Feel

Clean, hormone-supported satiety

Balanced, relaxed craving control

Which should you choose?

Choose GLP-1 Supplement if you want targeted metabolic and blood sugar support.

Choose Trim if stress or emotional eating is a big factor.

Many users get the best results by combining both — GLP-1 for hormonal balance + Trim for daily craving and ECS support.

Are Sunmed GLP-1 and Trim Safe Natural Alternatives to Prescription GLP-1 Drugs?

Both are non-prescription, plant-powered options designed to work with your body. They contain no synthetic hormones or stimulants. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you take medications or have health conditions.

We’ve had several questions about the new labeling that is starting to show up on our products. These changes are coming for good reasons but may definitely cause some confusion. Here’s a quick overview of the changes.

Concentration instead of total amount

Our old bottles all used to show the total amount of cannabinoids, such as 1000mg, 500mg, 600mg gummy bears, etc. To help users compare between products, SunMed has moved towards a ‘per unit’ type of measurement, going by milliliter or piece, depending on whether it’s a liquid or an edible. These are still the same total CBD strength, just divided by the measurement unit. Here’s a quick example breakdown of the new labels.

Remember, 30mL in each bottle, so you would multiply the new value x 30 for the total. For edibles, simply multiply the new value by the jar count.

Old Value

New Value

1000mg CBD Oil

33mg PER mL

750 Gummy Bears

25mg per piece (30 count)

500mg CBD Oil

17mg PER mL

2500mg Peach & Watermelon Rings

25mg per piece (150 count)

Hemp Supplement & Hemp Extract

Old bottles used to show the word ‘Tincture’ or ‘CBD.’ While the contents still contain the quality CBD we love, the labelling and ingredients have changed to help better comply with advice from the government. You may see the wording ‘Hemp Supplement’ on your bottle or ‘hemp extract’ in the ingredients. Remember, we still show the tested cannabinoid content on our lab reports, and it will be a full or broad spectrum CBD in your bottle.

CBG is garnering more interest recently, from consumers and researchers alike, enough for us to release our own CBG Rich water soluble formula. Abbreviated for ‘cannabigerol’, this cannabinoid is one of the cannabinoids typically present in cannabis plants, it does not produce the “high” like THC, and it generally is not found naturally in higher concentrations like cannabidiol (CBD) is. (Although some hemp strains have higher levels of CBG naturally.)

A good full / broad spectrum hemp extract will generally have around 95% CBD, and CBC, CBN, CBG, CBDV, THC, and some acid forms of these will make up the rest of the cannabinoid content. CBG has the same molecular ‘key’ shape to bind with our ECS, but is ‘shaped’ a little differently than CBD.

CBG’s Potential Health Benefits

Customers ask us all the time if CBD or CBG help with a specific condition or disorder. The FDA has not approved over the counter hemp products, so we can’t make any claims that it will treat or cure anything. Some of the research in different areas is summarized below.

Studies on CBG & Health

Psoriasis / Eczema – a pharmaceutical drug company is undergoing studies for a CBG drug they are hoping to use to treat chronic eczema and psoriasis. Medical studies have shown CBG is a candidate for psoriasis treatment.

Irritable Bowel Disease – One study on mice showed cannabigerol affected disease markers positively for mice with induced colitis. This indicated to the authors that CBG “could be “considered for clinical experimentation in IBD patients.”

Neurogenerative Diseases – Researchers at Complutense University of Madrid published an exciting study related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Hungtinton’s, MS, & Parkinson’s. They concluded that CBG was “as extremely active as neuroprotectant” and may hold promise for such diseases.

Pain & Inflammation – ” Furthermore, CBG has more potent analgesic, anti-erythema and lipooxygenase blocking activity than THC” according to another study.

Other candidates for further study or potential therapeutic avenues for CBG include glaucoma, some types of cancer, bone formation / osteoperosis, and MRSA. Again, it’s important to understand that we can’t say it will treat or cure anything, but this exciting cannabis molecule gives us another avenue of research and option to provide our customers who are looking specifically for CBG rich CBD products.

Update 3/1/2023: The first study measuring CBD vape on human cells was completed. The study indicates that vaping CBD (with an MCT oil carrier) could be harmful to lung cells. It would be safer to assume that vaping CBD does carry negative health risks, and to look for alternative methods of delivery, like our water soluble CBD, for example.

Vaping is hitting the news hard negatively, for good concern. The concerns are viable as Juul and more vape companies grow at an explosive pace. Is it too early to say that all vape is bad for you? Here’s what we know and don’t know.

UPDATE: Some cases directly linked to a specific brand of vape found to contain no CBD but full of synthetic marijuana as reported on USA Today.

The CDC’s initial warnings were to avoid off the street vape products in response to a growing number of reported lung related illnesses. No quality control is done on these, no COAs are available, and no entity is held responsible for the ingredients. (Avoiding off the street vape is a no-brainer)

UPDATE: Some cases directly linked to a specific brand of vape found to contain no CBD but full of synthetic marijuana as reported on USA Today.

Vape additives pose danger

When heated and vaporized, some compounds can act as irritants, inflammatory agents, or directly cause lung disease. If a pull is too hot, any vape can cause slight burning in the lungs which will elicit an inflammatory response

Vitamin E Acetate is under scrutiny as one of the common ingredients found in the samples the FDA tested from users who fell ill from vaping. (No Vitamin E Acetate in our cartridges). (Researches found that Vitamin E when heated forms a toxic, sometimes fatal ketene gas)

Diacetyl and other flavorings can contribute to a permanent and potentially life threatening lung disease

Even propylene glycol, a common additive to vape juice to bring out flavor, can cause problems with the lungs according to one recent study. It may be wise to avoid both VG & PG in your vape products. (No PG / VG / MCT in our vape cartridges)

Go as clean as you can get

<s>There’s no studies or evidence on cannabinoids themselves causing danger to the lungs in their vaporized form and may not be for some time as the majority of the industry uses PG / VG or some MCT as a base.</s>

Update:

If you don’t want the added risks of filler and additives, go with a vape cartridge that is as clean as possible. Consider our CBD cartridges – they’re additive free and completely lab tested to contain only natural cannabinoids and terpenes, not even PG / VG or MCT oil. Or for a similar, quick and powerful absorption like vape, water soluble CBD is a good alternative.

One of the most frequent questions we get is which mode of cannabidiol is best to take for a specific condition. We definitely recommend a broad or full spectrum CBD product, and our sublingual tinctures and water soluble products are both excellent, but your body will respond to these a little bit differently.

Formulation

Our SunMed sublingual tinctures utilize a supercritical C02 extraction method, and the 100+ cannabinoids (dominantly CBD) and cannabis terpenes are suspended into a pure MCT oil to create a sublingual CBD oil that is as as bioavailable as possible when held under the tongue. The liver will still break down the cannabinoids, but the oil will remain in the body for a longer period of time.

Our industry leading water soluble formula uses ultrasound and emulsification to separate the oils into incredibly small particle sizes (< 0.005 microns). This allows for a better uptake of the cannabinoids, and helps avoids the liver’s first pass elimination.

Water Soluble CBD Pros

Quick absorption in the body; a more powerful, more noticeable effect. Each milligram of a water soluble CBD will absorb better in the human body by a factor of about 3 – 4 relative to our sublingual tinctures. (Other manufacturers claim 4 to 10x, but they are assuming a subpar oil or edible as their basis claim)

Crosses the blood brain barrier more effectively due to its formulation

Faster, stronger effect. Can even be applied topically if needed (thought our topical cream is better formulated for that purpose)

Sublingual CBD Oil Pros

Steadier, more constant uptake of cannabinoids in the body, but more subtle / less effective, definitely needs to be dosed regularly for a week or two before altering the dose if searching for more effect.

According to one study, women may respond better than men to sublingual.

Both our water soluble and sublingual oils are great options, but we really recommend our customers start with water soluble CBD first due to it’s unique advantages and better value. You may want to experiment with both to see which provides you with the best value and effect. Remember, with either, dose regularly and consistently for best results, and be sure to let us know which works better for you!

What’s the difference between broad spectrum CBD (cannabidiol) products and full spectrum CBD products? Both are a higher quality than the isolate form, which is purely the cannibidiol chemical by itself. You’ll find all CBD products consist of one of these forms.

Isolate CBD

This is sometimes called ‘Pure CBD’, some companies label it as Zero THC CBD, and hides the fact that is a subpar product often added to edibles or higher ‘5000mg’ oil bottles sold cheaply. We don’t generally recommend the isolate form as explained below.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full Spectrum CBD is the label we give the product when our processing equipment keeps all the cannabinoids in the plant. There are an estimated 400 cannabinoids in the hemp / marijuana plant, and we’ve been able to identify several of those and start studying the interaction with the body. A good full spectrum product (like ours) will show lab reports with a high amount of CBD, and amounts of other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC, CBN, and CBD-V, as well as the natural terpenes from the plant. This causes a health benefit much stronger than the isolate itself (as we would expect the natural design to work better); some research points to a fourfold increase in the effectiveness of the plant at modulating the body.

One cannabinoid in particular, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is also included in our full spectrum products to the allowable < 0.3% Federal level. Some customers look specifically for products including a small amount of THC for specific conditions indicated by preliminary research or because they’ve heard that “you have to have the THC, else it won’t work!”

However, THC is not allowed in CBD products in certain states or regions, can build up in the system and cause one to fail a drug test, and early research is showing brain altering effects in adolescents of this specific cannabinoid. Which leads us to our Broad Spectrum CBD:

Broad Spectrum CBD

In order to provide a product that is as good as possible without the THC, we are able do a second pass on our products to remove the tetrahydrocannabinol itself, while keeping the other cannabinoids and terpenes still in the base. This still gives a great quality CBD oil but helps keep THC out of the system. SunMed offers third party lab testing on broad spectrum products to show the THC is not detectable to a precision of 3 (e.g., .000). Note: we cannot guarantee a passed drug test with any of our products, as some drug tests are not specific for THC or CBD.

There is a little confusion about the labelling – some manufacturers label their products as ‘Full Spectrum – 0THC’ when it should really be called a Broad Spectrum. Both are a good options as long as the third party labs verify

Generally speaking as our culture adapts, if you’re in a workplace that can drug test you, you may choose to stick to the broad spectrum line of products (or simply talk to your employer about the use of full spectrum products). If you aren’t concerned about drug testing and want the possible benefits of the added THC, go with the full spectrum. (We do not advise giving full spectrum / THC to adolescents or children, and generally not pets)

Make sure you know what’s in your CBD! – We’re transparent with ours as we know ours is the highest quality possible. All our labs are available here. (Different labs available for full spectrum than the broad spectrum).
